Elisabeth Sparkle: There was some slight misuse of Substance
Chronology
A fading celebrity takes a black market drug: a substance that replicates cells and temporarily creates a younger, better version of themselves. There’s nothing scarier than being human, and these films delve into the inhuman ways our bodies can betray us. From the chilling to the bold, here are five body horror films you might have missed. Ray Liotta was cast in the film in February 2022, but died in May of that year before he could film his scenes. Dennis Quaid replaced him, but Liotta is still mentioned in the “Notes of Thanks” director’s note during the end credits.. The toilet mirror reappears intact after being repeatedly broken during the fight sequence.. Special thanks in the end credits are given to the numerous extras in the theatrical scene, who were covered in blood.. According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) website, the theatrical release version of The Substance in the UK was uncut (it had a running time of 141 minutes and 7 seconds), but the home media release version was cut by approximately three seconds (it had a running time of 141 minutes and 4 seconds). The BBFC did not state what the cuts were..

Pump It Up Written by Michael Hall, Leonardo Stella Starring Earl Gregory Produced by Julien Deguines. 1) Many reviewers said that they didn’t like the ending and that it ruined (or damaged) the whole movie. That it should have been “more subtle” or less crazy etc. I disagree. The ending is exactly what it should have been. I don’t know what movie they’ve seen, but THE SUBSTANCE is NOT a subtle and “nuanced” movie. It’s raw, wild, crazy and a bit simplistic. The symbolism is so basic that even a child would understand it. Coralie Fargeat is not Lars Von Trier nor Andrzej Zulawski etc.
2) Everything worked in this movie
Her previous movie (Revenge) was visually amazing and fun but overall, a bad movie. She is not that skilled at creating subtle movies. She is very good when it comes to chaos, madness, blood etc. And that is a very useful skill: when an artist knows their limits. THE SUBSTANCE ended exactly as it should have and the whole movie plays to its particular strengths. At first, I was momentarily distracted by all this sensuality. I’ve watched much more subtle and elegant erotic films than this. But as it developed, I realized there was a reason. All this sensuality and close-ups of Qualley’s body had a purpose.
And that was a smart decision
It’s all happening to serve the message of this film, that’s how it was supposed to be interpreted. It seems like simple voyeurism but it’s not. The audience should be fed up with all this stuff. Basically, it worked as a distorting mirror. I think Fargeat wanted to show how creepy/perverted so many people have become these days. There’s obviously the obvious message about the hypocrisy/perversity/sickness of the entire entertainment industry and the pressure stars feel as they get older. But there’s also a second layer. So many perverts and weirdos and empty people these days. It’s like Fargeat is telling them: Look, this is just meat, this is what you’ve idolized, and you’re also feeding this whole industry disease, while they feed it to you.
These characters are symbols
3) Demi Moore was really great, believe the hype. Qualley was really good too. Quaid was over the top, this was definitely over the top acting, but that’s exactly what Fargeat asked him to do. Don’t forget that these characters are not “people”, this is not a drama with ordinary people. There is nothing realistic here on the surface. These characters are just vessels, and even though they are not real people, everything that is revealed through them is real as hell.
