“Punisher”, season 2. Frank’s last war

January 26, 2019kino and TV shows

The punisher died. Frank Kasl is alive. He dealt with everyone who was involved in the murder of his family, received a carte blanche from the government and now just drives in America, shortly evenings in provincial bars. A normal life is already looming on the horizon – without violence and endless nightmares. Maybe even with new love.

But Casl has never been a chosen one of fate: on one ill-fated day, he sees how a teenage girl is pursuing a whole detachment of thugs, and, of course, cannot but intervene. So Frank is drawn into another bloody war.

Serve and protect

The first season "Punisher" Not everyone liked it, and this can be understood. Fans of the character were waiting for non -stop action and black humor, and as a result they received a leisurely spy thriller with an admixture of drama about the "Afghan syndrome". Purely technically, the series was performed at an excellent level, better than "Iron Fist" , "Luke Cage" Or the second "Jessica Jones" , but with his gloom and seriousness he scared away many. Well, the second season is much more loyal to the audience, not used to the pace and style Marvel-Netflix : He has become noticeably cheerful and now more reminiscent of old -school fighters than a traction drama.

As clear from the tie, the series takes as a basis the plot scheme "Leon" , "Logan" and dozen other, less famous paintings. Here is a seasoned warrior, here is someone small and weak, whom he protects, but a whole army of villains who hunts for them. It’s not too fresh, of course, however, the stories about the punisher never differed in particular originality-the main thing is that the hero has a reason to send someone to the next world. In addition, this is only one of the plot lines of the season.

As Geralt used to say from Rivia: “You, B *** b, do not learn!"

The other is dedicated to the former friend of Frank, and now the sworn enemy is Billy Russo, whose face Kasl turned into a bloody mess. As it turned out, the punisher overdid it and not just mutilated the traitor, but repelled his memories for a few years. Typically, the plot move with the loss of memory does not indicate anything except the weakness of the scriptwriters and the desire to stretch the timing (remember https://sister-site.org/jammy-jack/ at least the third "Spider-Man" Sam Reimi), however, here he works perfectly, representing a familiar character from a completely different angle. From the two -faced and self -propelled snob, Rousseau turned into an almost miserable, confused cripple, which sincerely does not understand what happened to him and why. We see the remnants of that Billy that was an honest soldier of his country and faithful comrade Frank Kasla. His throwing and the gradual transformation into a kind of monster Frankenstein, a revenge and cruel creature – perhaps one of the strongest sides of the script. Of course, to the sword or Kingpin from the third "Daredevils" The villain does not reach, but Ben Barnes is still damn good in this role.

The canonical head-heading person had to abandon the sake of realism: after all, today plastic surgery and not that corrects this

But here in Billy's head a complete mishmash

Good word and gun

A little less charismatic, but the second antagonist of the season is also very effective-Pastor killer John Pilgrim. It is even strange that the scriptwriters invented him from scratch, because he gives the impression of a purely comic enemy of the punisher. Constantly quotes the Bible, grinds about the will of God, and simultaneously shoots and strangles everyone who will stand in the way – in general, the next replenishment in the camp of classical religious villains, we have seen such more than once or twice. Much more interesting how the creators treat the character. They build a familiar image, then to deconstruct it a little bit of it. If at the beginning the viewer dreams that Pilgrim's brains were knocked out as soon as possible, then it turns out that he and Frank have much more in common than it seemed at first glance. In fact, they are the reflection of each other: both soldiers who are ready to kill as much as they like to protect loved ones and in the name of higher justice. The spiritual kinship of the characters, by the way, is very original in a pair of combat scenes.

John Pilgrim does not look very menacing, but the appearance, as usual, is deceiving

Supporting heroes this season receive natural development after the events of the previous. Agent Madani from a tedious idealist turned into an aggressive paranoid, but this change to her to face. At times, Dean is so brutal that it is just right to start your body armor with a white skull. And most importantly, it is no longer annoying.

The role in the plot is much greater than before, Curtis plays – the last army friend Frank. Through it, the creators continue to reveal the difficult topic of PTSD and modern wars. In the first season, the problems of veterans were one of the leitmotifs, but in the center there was only the story of a suicide bomber. Now Curtis's wards are really important for the narrative.

Curtis is one of the few who can understand what Frank has gone through. But even it is difficult for him to reconcile with the methods of a friend

Almost the god of war

Of course, the main and most successful replenishment in Casta is the young scammer Amy performed by Georgia Wigham. From whether the ward will be enraged by the viewer moderately or too much, the success of the whole season was directly dependent. Fortunately, both the actress and the scriptwriters coped. The girl turned out to be very alive and acute in her tongue: all comedy scenes of the season are associated with her, which, oddly enough, is a lot. But she is not JJ Binx in a skirt-all humor is appropriate and organic. In addition, it makes a very bright duet with Kalos, reminiscent of Leon and Matilda from the picture of Luke Besson. They interact remarkably: over and over again, they quarrel, make up and teach each other.

But, of course, everyone is watching the “punisher” primarily for the sake of the punisher himself. Here the creators remain true to themselves and show him more likely a hero than an antihero. In the series Frank is not as cruel and cold -blooded as its comic prototype: it is still able to compass and even spares some villains. On the one hand, this is a significant retreat from the canon, because it is precisely the uncompromising and radical methods that distinguish the punisher from other comic characters. And on the other, it is much easier to empathize with such a handmill! John Bernal proves for the third time that no one has played better than him with a skull on his chest and, it seems, will not play. His facial expressions, a look, a hoarse voice, a gait – everything works to create an integral and recognizable image.

Who would have thought that the “punisher” would go humor, and besides, not black

Well, finally about action. In the first season of dynamic scenes, the cat cried – no, those that were, of course, were waiting, but still they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Much more attention was paid to drama and detective. Here, the balance has finally shifted in the right direction: in each series there is at least one spectacular episode-either a fight, and such that the teeth fly in all directions, or a shootout, even a couple of chases is there. In the end, the punisher does what he should: punish a lot and tastefully.

Of course, the second season is not deprived of flaws, and those who are familiar with other shows for five minutes of the deceased Marvel-Netflix line, probably know what. Yes, this is again a downed pace. Somewhere after the middle, the series suddenly gives the brakes, and events begin to develop oh-oh-oh-e-explosive. At least one or two episode-well, or at least a number of scenes-could be thrown out without loss of meaning. But no: since it is said to shoot thirteen episodes, then we are doing thirteen.

Okay, not getting used to fans. The advantages of the "punisher" nevertheless with a huge margin outweigh a few minuses. If this is the last season (which is most likely so), then the story of Frank Kasla received a decent conclusion. All tails are pulled up, all lines are finished, all characters are opened. Well, if you take stock on the whole series, then the “punisher” from Netflix is the best screen embodiment of the character in history. All fans of comics and they sympathized with the same.
